Managing AngerHow Can We Transform Anger Into Something Positive?By Michele RosenthalLet's talk about managing anger... about transforming it from a soul-stealing dark force into something more positive and useful! In other articles about managing anger, we discovered that anger can be a good thing. A positive survival tool. Now's the time to figure out how to use it to your advantage! All of this research leads me to a new thought: What if we each took that angry energy and used it for something positive? What if, instead of railing against the people who try to help us, the unfairness of fate, or the 1,001 things that can irritate us in a day, we harnessed that energy and used it for our own healing? The energy (as we know from how it feels to be ferociously angry) is strong, which means it could have great success in achieving things if directed the right way. When we manifest pure anger all we do is drain ourselves of good energy, literally. In this interesting article, 'Anger: The Greatest Motivator of All' Kathy Wilson talks about how we are the ones who determine what the energy becomes. She says, "When you experience the emotion of anger, you create one of the most extremely powerful energies that we humans have been given...." "Although powerful, the energy of anger isn't bad or good. It simply exists as energy. What you choose to do with it determines whether it is bad or good. As with any energy, you can choose to use it in harmful ways or in beneficial ways." And so we come to a point in our understanding of anger management when it is possible to look at the whole topic another way. Instead of being angry, how about thinking about how much we have to be joyful about? How about getting angry that we aren't happy and deciding to fight as hard as we need to in order to achieve a happier, healthier life? How about taking that pure energy and transforming it to help instead of harming ourselves and those around us? Managing Anger = Pursuing JoyOn New Years Eve 2007 I resolved to take all my angry energy and use it in a positive, healing way. For me, this meant deciding to use that energy in the pursuit of joy. I decided to take that adrenalin rush of anger and find a positive outlet for it - on the dancefloor. All of that antsy angry energy spilled into the beat of the music and out of me. I danced multiple times per week! I focused my energy and attention on learning Latin and ballroom dances. Soon, I began to relax. I became more peaceful, more tolerant; less angry, more... well... happy. This had an immeasurable effect on my ability to heal. Anger is a destructive internal energy, sapping us of focus, follow-through and direction. By managing anger and giving that energy a positive channel, I was able to set aside my growling self... so that the self who wanted to heal could come to the forefront of who I was. No one is ever alone in the experience of stress-related anger. You may feel isolated, but you are just like the rest of us struggling to make meaning out of experience and find a way to move on. Ideas for Managing AngerAnger is a natural and organic response to disturbing events. However, the key to coping... to managing anger... lies in understanding anger, and then discovering how to channel that energy so it becomes a driving force for good instead of bad. We all have the power to choose our behaviors and our perceptions of the world around us. Start choosing today to recognize your anger and find positive ways to channel it. What activity can you do to release the energy in a way that does not hurt anyone else or damage yourself? What hobby can you pursue? What cause can you campaign for? What sport can you develop? Anger is passion, and passion can be a healing emotion if we utilize it appropriately. Find a positive and suitable outlet for managing anger... and see how your body, mind, friends and family all benefit from your proactive use of this beneficial survival skill. |
