Share Your Anger StoryMichele's Story"Coping with Stress-Related Anger"My anger story... I'm a trauma survivor who struggled with undiagnosed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for over 25 years. Suffice it to say, I was angry - a lot! I was angry at the unfairness of my traumatic suffering; I was angry that I was isolated in a mental health issue that I didn't understand. I was angry when my family tried to help me. And I was really, really angry when they got frustrated that I couldn't be helped at all. Sound familiar? The resulting stress of the powerlessness of experience can transform us from happy, go-lucky people into grimacing, growling gargoyles. Before my trauma I was a nice girl; loving, kind and generally happy. Afterward, I always seemed to be on the verge of fury. I was angry when things didn't go my way. I was angry when I couldn't make things go my way. I was obsessed with controlling my environment so I felt safe, and furious when anything got in the way of that obsession. I was awfully difficult to be around. I snarled at and stared down anyone who got in my path. I had a short fuse both with the external world and my own internal self. It was not a very nice way to live! And then three years ago I was diagnosed with PTSD and went on a healing rampage. Now, I am 100% PTSD-free. Looking back at whom I was I can't believe how much I let anger rule me. While the unexpected stress of experience can have dramatic effects on our personalities, it is up to us to recognize the aberrations in our behavior, educate ourselves about them, and research resolutions.
